The light rail of Cagliari , official name Metrocagliari , is a light rail system in the Sardinian city ​​of Cagliari . It is classified as Metropolitana leggera (light metro). As part of the Sardinian narrow-gauge railway Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS), it also has a track width of 950 mm . The fleet consists of articulated trams of the type 06T from Škoda . The structure is the EU - Structural Funds promoted. The first, 6.5-kilometer, single-track line with seven intermediate stations between the Piazza Repubblica and Monserrato stations went into operation in March 2008. It was built from 2004 on what had been a double-track section of the Cagliari - Isili railway from 1888.

The original plans envisage a gradual expansion of the network to four lines. The commissioning of the extension to the university, planned for 2011, took place on February 14, 2015.

Line 1 has been connecting Piazza Repubblica in Cagliari with the University Hospital in Monserrato since the extension on February 14, 2015, and has eleven stops. It is single-track with the exception of the sections Piazza Repubblica - Largo Gennari and Città Mercato - Via Caracalla ; there are also diversions at all stops with the exception of Città Mercato and Redentore .

Timetable

Line 1 operates from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays. From 6:26 a.m. to 9:16 p.m. (departure from the clinic) there is a 10-minute cycle, with five courses in use. At the rest of the time there is a train every 20 minutes, with three circuits.
A train runs every 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays.
The travel time for the entire route is 22 minutes.

Line 2

Line 2 connects San Gottardo with Settimo San Pietro without stopping over a distance of 4.25 kilometers. The journey time is 6 minutes. The diesel-powered trains to Mandas and Isili also run on the same single-track line. Line 2 operates on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. There is no continuous regular service on weekdays: the intervals vary between 20 and 60 minutes, as the railroad trains can also be used for the same route. On Sundays, every day of the day, every 20 minutes, as the light rail is the only means of transport on the route.

The Gottardo - Policlinico extension went into operation on February 14, 2015. It is 1950 meters long, of which 1750 meters run on an elevated route . It was originally planned to open at the end of 2011.

The investment costs for the realization of this route amounted to 20 million euros. For the construction part of the route of the never realized railway Monserrato - San Paolo was used, in order to reach the university clinic and the university campus via a bridge over the national road 554.

The Dell'Argine stopover is served on this section of the route.

The travel time for this section is four minutes. Except for the first and last courses, all journeys were extended with the opening of the new section from San Gottardo to the new Policlinico / Università terminal.

Extension San Gottardo - Settimo San Pietro

The railway line San Gottardo - Settimo San Pietro was electrified and has been served by light rail vehicles since April 3, 2015.

Planning

Extension from Piazza Repubblica to Piazza Matteotti

In 2012 it was announced that the next extension of the light rail at the city end would lead through the center to the train station in Piazza Matteotti. The preliminary draft planning should take place in 2012. The construction costs are estimated at 24 million euros. The 2.5-kilometer route will run from Piazza Repubblica along Via Dante, Viale Cimitero, Piazza Madre Teresa di Calcutta, Viale Diaz and Via Roma to Piazza Matteotti. The opening should take place in two stages. The first construction phase from Piazza Repubblica to Piazza Madre Teresa di Calcutta should be completed by the end of 2015. The opening of the entire route to the station was planned for 2017. So far (April 2019) the construction work has not yet started.

Incidents

Collision between two light rail vehicles on January 19, 2016

On January 19, 2016, two trams collided head-on in the single-track section near the "Centro commerciale" station. Numerous students were injured, four of them seriously.
