The structure is the EU - Structural Funds promoted. The first, 6.5-kilometer, single-track line with seven intermediate stations between the Piazza Repubblica and Monserrato stations went into operation in March 2008. It was built from 2004 on what had been a double-track section of the Cagliari - Isili railway from 1888.
The original plans envisage a gradual expansion of the network to four lines. The commissioning of the extension to the university, planned for 2011, took place on February 14, 2015.

The 2.5-kilometer route will run from Piazza Repubblica along Via Dante, Viale Cimitero, Piazza Madre Teresa di Calcutta, Viale Diaz and Via Roma to Piazza Matteotti.
