The Oberleitungsbus Chieti ( Italian Filovia di Chieti ) is composed of a line electrical transport in the Italian provincial Chieti in the region Abruzzo . The line connects the old town of Chieti Alta, enthroned on a mountain ridge, with the industrial settlement Chieti Scalo in the valley, where the station of the Italian state railway is also located. A height difference of over 150 meters is overcome. An extension was recently put into operation at the northern end of the existing line. The operator is the local transport company La Panoramica .

The trolleybus line 1 starts east of the old town on the forecourt of the main cemetery right next to the Sant'Anna church , which gives the terminus its name. After passing the roundabout used as a turning loop , the route leads on Via Padre Alessandro Valignani towards the center. One of the two depots is located next to the former Riunuti Santissima Annunziata hospital . The route crosses Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi and then circles the old town in the north on Via Federico Salomone and Via Silvino Olivieri .

The central bus station Largo Cavallerizza is only a few meters away from the Cathedral of San Giustino , where you can turn around . About Via Asinio Herio and Via Madonna degli Angeli and Via Madonna della Misericordia it comes out of the old town. On the way down into the Pescara valley , the route winds its way over several serpentines through little built-up area characterized by orchards . At the foot of the mountain on Via Collonnetta Chieti Scalo is reached. At Piazzale Marconi there is another turning point across the station forecourt .

Line 1 branches off here to the north and then follows Via Benedetto Croce to the former terminus in Piazza Martiri Pennesi , a roundabout under the bridge of the motorway slip road . From here, the new line follows Via dei Vestini to the southeast. The route leads past the Gabriele D'Annunzio University campus to the turning loop below the newly built Ospedale Clinicizzato hospital .

Another two-kilometer catenary from Martiri Pennesi on Viale della Unità D'Italia further north and via San Martino to the San Martino terminal is out of service. Although it is connected to the existing route by means of air switches, it cannot be used without further ado due to the lack of modifications at a roundabout at Via Gorizia . In the course of the new line to the hospital, the overhead line to San Martino was also overhauled. Bus routes 3 and 8 currently operate here.

The trolleybus system in Chieti has existed since August 1, 1950, when it replaced a narrow-gauge railway that was badly damaged during World War II . The line ran between Sant'Anna and Madonna delle Piane (today Martini Pennesi ) on the route that is still in use today and thus established a connection between the city center on the mountain and the train station in Pescaratal.

Due to damage to the overhead contact line, which had been neglected for years, operations had to be stopped at the end of 1992 and most of the damaged lines were removed. In 1998 the decision was made to resume trolleybus operations. For this purpose, 2.4 million euros were made available for the installation of the contact line. The erection of the first masts began in 2001, and two years later the line between the train station and Sant'Anna was restored. The catenary was then installed at the northwest end of the route and a new section to the Ospedale Clinicizzato hospital was added.

Seven of the Menarini / TIBB 201 FLU vehicles acquired in 1985 and parked for years were put back into operation, while the remaining three vehicles can only be used as spare parts dispensers due to their condition. The upgrade was carried out in Modena, in the course of which the menarini were also given a new paint job. On December 2, 2005, the first test drive took place with the 212 and 213 cars, which had been parked for 13 years up to this point.

On December 26, 2009, the line was put back into operation after extensive renovation. However, due to the construction of an underpass at the level of the university, electrical operation on the new section was discontinued shortly after the reopening. The work cost the region a total of around 10 million euros. Simultaneously with the commissioning, the contact wire voltage was increased from 600 to 750 volts.

On July 6, 2011, a contract was signed with Van Hool and Vossloh Kiepe for the procurement of five A 330 T low-floor trolleybuses. The three-door new vehicles with a length of twelve meters were delivered in August and September 2012. After extensive test drives, they were presented to the public and blessed on March 25, 2013 on the square in front of the cathedral in Chieti Alta. Since then, the Van Hool have been used in liner services. In contrast to the older Menarini, they have an emergency drive system consisting of a diesel generator. This allows a more flexible reaction to diversions or disturbances.

On April 15, 2013, the new building section past the university campus to the new hospital was put back into operation.

Depots

La Panoramica has two depots in Chieti Alta. The older one is located in a confined space right next to the route on Via Padre Alessandro Valignani and is equipped with overhead lines.

Another depot is located around 400 meters north on Via Picena . It is not accessible via an operating line and is therefore mainly used for diesel buses and long-term trolleybuses. The management of the transport company is also located here.
