The Roma Laziali – Giardinetti railway is a narrow-gauge railway in local traffic in the Italian capital, Rome . It runs from Roma Laziali station, at the end of the southern wing of Termini station , to the suburbs to the east. From 1917 to 1935 the railway line reached Frosinone in its maximum expansion .
history
The railway was built by the Società Ferrovie Vicinali (SFV) with a gauge of 950 mm and operated electrically from the start . At first it ran with 1650 volts DC , today with 1500 volts. Apart from the section in the historic center of Rome, it has a track bed separated from the street area. However, the operation is similar to that of a tram . The level crossings are numerous.
The Rome - Genazzano section was opened in 1916 with a branch line to Frascati (47 km). In 1917 the line reached Frosinone . The network was now 140 km long.
The railway was gradually abandoned in various sections:
- 1935: Frosinone - Fiuggi , due to inefficiency
- 1982: Fiuggi - Genazzano , after a landslide
- 1984: Genazzano - Pantano, after landslide
- 1993: The Pantano - San Cesareo section is described as existing but closed.
- 2008: operations on the Giardinetti - Pantano section ceased and integrated into Line C of the Rome Metro .
The part of the line that is still used today is operated by ATAC , which took over the former operator Metropolitana di Roma SpA on January 1, 2010 . Before the Giardinetti - Pantano section was abandoned, it was used by around 35,000 passengers a day. With the exception of a short single-track section between Porta Maggiore and the Ponte Casilino stop , which was a track loop , the line has been expanded to two-track. The depot and depot are located in Centocelle .
With the opening of Line C of the Roman subway , the parallel Roma Laziali – Giardinetti railway was shortened on its side facing Rome to Centocelle station . Line C of the Roman subway now operates as an island between Parco di Centocelle and Lodi . The Parco di Centocelle station of the metro is about 500 m away from the Centocelle station of the narrow-gauge railway. As soon as Line C of the U-Bahn has taken to the city center, the narrow-gauge railway can be expected to cease operations.
