The K & U Bäckerei GmbH is the largest (as of end 2018) Backwarenfilialist Germany and has its headquarters in Offenburg . It is a 100 percent subsidiary of Edeka Südwest . The bakery is mainly represented in Edeka branches in southwest Germany, but also has other branches.

history

The Gottlieb bakery had existed on Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse in Freiburg since around 1970 . Bäckerbub GmbH was founded in 1986 and the Usländer bakery was taken over in 1988 , after which the company was represented on the market as the Usländer town bakery . The bakery grew through acquisitions until 1992. From 1992 Edeka Südwest took over the business shares, the bakery group has been expanding ever since. After the merger of the Karl Wucherer bakery in Reutlingen and the Usländer town bakery in Freiburg in 1998, the company entered the market as the K & U town bakery in 1999 . In 2004 the company Knupfer from Mannheim was taken over. The name of the company is derived from the merger of the companies KaWu (Karl Wucherer) from Reutlingen , Knupfer from Mannheim and the city bakery Usländer from Freiburg to form K&U Bäckerei GmbH .

The roots of the long-established Reutlingen baker family Wucherer can be traced back to the year 1688. The Wucherer bakery is still located in the Reutlingen parent company at Wilhelmstrasse 9 , although it was only connected to the later KaWu large bakery in family terms . Because in 1954 Karl Wucherer - one of the sons of the then master baker Gottlob Wucher and uncle of the current bakery operator Hans Wucherer jr. - self-employed and opened in Reutlinger Karlstr. 30 his own bakery. Over the years, this expanded far beyond the Reutlingen area to one of the largest and most successful large bakeries in Germany. Until the merger with the Usländer bakery, KaWu's baked goods were advertised with the slogan “Full of the sun” . With the merger to form the city bakery K & U , the former KaWu logo in the form of a shining sun was also taken over into the joint K&U logo. Since the late 1970s, KaWu's headquarters have been in the West industrial area of the Reutlingen suburb of Betzingen . According to its own statement, the current K&U bakery there has the most modern production facility for the production of pretzels in Baden-Württemberg.

Bakery Ecker

The Bäckerhaus Hans Ecker GmbH was founded in 1949 by Hans Ecker in Homburg . In the course of time, a network of branches was established in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. In 2010 the company was taken over by the K&U bakery, but the branches continue to operate under the name “Bäckerhaus Ecker”.

In May 2016, Bäckerhaus Hans Ecker had around 90 branches. In fiscal 2014, the company achieved a turnover of 31.8 million with 400 employees Euro .
