The Bärenschleuse is a small lock on the Issel and is located in the Wesel district of Lackhausen .

location

The Bärenschleuse is located on the eastern edge of the Wesel urban area, in the immediate vicinity of the city limits of Hamminkeln and Hünxe . The closest villages are Lackhausen and Obrighoven . The facility is located between the streets Wurmflakstraße and An der Issel, the latter of which ends just under a kilometer northwest at Bundesstraße 70 . The Issel comes from the northeast towards the Bärenschleuse and bends there almost at a 90 ° angle in order to continue flowing in a northwest direction. Coming from the east, the Drevenacker Landwehr drainage ditch flows into the Issel at this point.

history

The still operational bear lock was built in the early 17th century. It originally served to fill the trenches around the fortified city of Wesel. For this purpose, the water was divided so that part of the water followed the actual course of the river to the northwest, while the branched arm ran to the southwest towards the city. The artificial arm flowed into the Rhine near the mouth of the Lippe . This was the case well into the 19th century. Today this arm no longer exists, but the sluice and the kink created by the adjustment of the river bed have been preserved. The lock is still operational due to restoration work. The name of the Bärenschleuse goes back to the Low German name “Baer” (spoken with a long “a”) for “Schleuse”.
