The bearded elephant ( Inula barbata ) is a species of the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
Identifying features
The bearded elephant is a perennial herbaceous plant or subshrub that reaches heights of 25 to 50 centimeters. The leaves measure 7 to 10 × 1.2 to 2 centimeters and are lanceolate, glabrous to rough and finely ciliate. The flower heads are single and have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters.
The flowering period extends from July to September.
Occurrence
The bearded elephant occurs in the western Himalayas from Kashmir to Nepal at altitudes of 2600 to 3400 meters.

The bearded elephant is rarely used as an ornamental plant.
