Béla Korény
Béla Korény (* 1946 ) is an Austrian pianist, composer and concert organizer of Hungarian origin.
Korény grew up in the Hungarian village of Csepreg. The family later lived in Budapest, where the father earned his living as a musician in dance halls. Korény was rejected from the state music school because of lack of talent, instead a neighbor, György Cziffra , gave him piano lessons. In 1956 the family fled to Austria.
In Vienna, Korény studied piano with Hans Bohnenstingl at the conservatory , then composition with Alfred Uhl at the University of Music and Performing Arts . He gave up his plan to become a classical pianist after hearing Friedrich Gulda play jazz. He composed film music for several productions and spent several years traveling with his family and various bands across Europe.
In the 1980s he returned to Vienna and founded the Broadway Bar with his wife , in which, according to his information, eight guests could be comfortably seated and 80 to 90 guests if you moved closer together. There he offered his guests partly permanently organized, partly improvised programs with classical, jazz and world music. The artists who performed here included Udo Jürgens , Mercedes Echerer and Cornelius Obonya . Julian Rachlin and Gerhard Bronner , Billy Joel , Mischa Maisky and Leonard Bernstein , Michel Piccoli , Isabelle Huppert , Roger Moore , Kiefer Sutherland and Helmut Qualtinger . In 2007 he had to close the Broadway Bar due to rental problems.
He then worked as artistic director in Spitz and Dürnstein in the Wachau, where he won Angelika Kirchschlager to perform. He himself was on stage in the Theater in der Josefstadt , at the Akademietheater and at the Reichenau Festival , organized programs on Georg Kreisler or Gerhard Bronner (with Konstanze Breitebner and Timna Brauer ), an Anton Kuh evening with Stephan at various venues in Vienna Paryla and an English program with Katharina Stemberger ( How much is that in shoes? ) And performed his own compositions with the Viennese virtuosos .
