Béla Síki

Béla Síki (born February 21, 1923 in Budapest ) is a Swiss pianist and music teacher of Hungarian origin. He is considered one of the great representatives of the Hungarian piano school of the 20th century. He is a recognized specialist in the works of Béla Bartók and Franz Liszt .

life and work

Béla Síki studied with Ernst von Dohnányi and Leó Weiner at the Budapest Music Academy . In 1947 he went to Switzerland and continued his education with Dinu Lipatti at the Geneva Conservatory . In 1943 he was awarded the Franz Liszt Prize . In 1928 he won a second prize at the Geneva International Piano Competition .

He then began an international piano career with concerts in Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa and America. In 1965 he was appointed professor of piano at the University of Washington in Seattle . Between 1980 and 1985 he taught at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati . He returned to Seattle in 1985. He has given master classes in several countries such as Japan, Australia, the United States and Canada. He played numerous recordings, mainly from the work of Johann Sebastian Bach .

Síki was an internationally sought-after and recognized piano teacher. Among his students were the Australian pianist Kathryn Selby , the South African Anton Nel , the New Zealander David Bollard and the Catalan Carme Vilà .
