The Bënça ( Albanian  also  Bënçë ) is a mountain stream about 15 kilometers long in the Qark Gjirokastra in southern Albania. It drains the poorly developed karst landscape of the Upper Kurvelesh and flows into the Vjosa in the immediate vicinity of the district town of Tepelena .

The aqueduct built under Ali Pasha

The Bënça is created by several streams that have formed deeply cut gorges in the karst landscape of the Kurvelesh. The V valley has slopes that are sometimes more than 1000 meters high. The river passes several gorges . After a few kilometers, above the village of Bënça, the valley gradually widens slightly. As a result, the Bënça flows in a small gravel bed in a U-valley . In addition to the gravel bed, on the left side of the valley there is usually about twelve to 15 meters high to a terrace . In between, the terrace is so wide that only a narrow gorge remains for the river. To the north of the settlement of Bënça, the river breaks through a short gorge, which is spanned by an aqueduct from Ali Pasha's time.

The river bed has the character of a torrent because of the large bed load , but at least in the lower reaches it carries water all year round.

As far as the town of Bënça, the river is accompanied by an asphalt road, which then climbs unpaved into Kurvelesh. The Tepelena prison is located on the outskirts of Tepelena , directly on the left bank of the Bënça.

The ecological condition of the Bënça is generally very good. The river is little subject to human influence. However, a small power plant was planned in 2015, to which the water should be fed through a tunnel several hundred meters long. The massive interventions were criticized nationally and internationally.
