Boehmetal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Böhmetal was the intended name of a city in Lower Saxony that was created through a city merger . The municipalities of Walsrode , Bad Fallingbostel and Bomlitz , located in the southwest of Lüneburg Heath , planned to merge until the 2011 municipal elections in order to achieve savings and use synergies more effectively. The river Böhme gives it its name . The three core locations are only 5 to 6 kilometers apart.

The area of the then intended large commune is located between Hamburg , Bremen and Hanover in the district of Heidekreis in the old district of Fallingbostel. After the city was established, Böhmetal would have been first in Lower Saxony with an area of 398 km² and eighth in Germany. The city of Böhmetal would have had around 42,700 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 107 inhabitants / km². This would have made it - after Lüneburg and before Uelzen - the second most populous municipality in the interior of the Lüneburg Heath.

The merger was supported by both major popular parties, the CDU and the SPD - with the exception of the SPD Bad Fallingbostel - while Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and the FDP reacted rather cautiously. Böhmetal would have taken over from Bad Fallingbostel as the district town of the Soltau-Fallingbostel district (since August 1, 2011, Heidekreis district ). On November 2, 2008, a public survey was carried out on the merger . In Bad Fallingbostel, just under 80% of voters, with a turnout of just under 62%, spoke out against the merger. In Walsrode and Bomlitz there was approval (56.4% in Bomlitz and 53.8% in Walsrode) for the merger. The councils of the three municipalities implemented the results of the public survey on November 10th. In Bad Fallingbostel the merger was rejected, in Bomlitz and Walsrode the councils voted for the merger.

In Bad Fallingbostel, a citizens' initiative was founded in advance to speak out against the merger. According to their own statements, 1500 residents of Bad Fallingbostel belonged to the citizens' initiative 'Ja Bad Fallingbostel No Böhmetal' (as of October 1, 2008). The citizens' initiative 'Pro-Fusion', which advocated a merger, was launched by citizens from all three municipalities.

The two communities Bomlitz and Walsrode, which had agreed to the formation of the city of Böhmetal, merged on January 1, 2020.
