Börries von Münchhausen (* 1587 ; † July 9, 1646 in Aerzen ) was a German nobleman and civil servant.

Life

Börries von Münchhausen, a grandson of the mercenary leader Hilmar von Münchhausen and son of Hilmar the Younger von Münchhausen from the noble family first mentioned in 1183 , attended the school of the former Möllenbeck monastery near Rinteln and then the school in Hanover. From 1603 he studied theology and law with his older brother Heinrich Hilmar von Münchhausen at the University of Wittenberg , 1607 in Giessen , 1608 in Strasbourg and Basel . From 1609 to 1611 he traveled to France, from 1613 to 1615 Italy. After returning home, after the death of his father in 1617, he took over the pledge of the Aerzen office . In 1622 he was appointed head captain to the ministry of Ernst von Steinberg in Wolfenbüttel . In 1625 he became a Privy Councilor.

During the Thirty Years War , Münchhausen returned to his family property in Rinteln in 1626 . In 1629 he took over the castle in Aerzen due to an inheritance division among his brothers. After the death of his brother Heinrich Hilmar, he also became master of Schwöbber Castle . Due to the edict of restitution of 1629 he was expelled from Aerzen by the bishop of Hildesheim as the new sovereign, but refused to renounce the well-earned claims of his family. He received the office of Aerzen back after the Edict of Restitution was repealed by the Swedish King Gustav Adolf . Börries von Münchhausen died in Aerzen in 1646 and was buried in the family crypt there.
