geography

Böttingen is located in northern Baden-Württemberg on a loop of the Neckar near Gundelsheim. The lowest point in the Heilbronn district is in Böttingen, at 142 m above sea level. The river floodplain of the Neckar between Böttingen and Haßmersheim is popularly called Böttinger Loch . The Michaelsberg , located to the east of the village and around 240 m above sea level, also belongs to the local area . About 200 m northwest of Böttingen are two quarry ponds, the larger of which has a direct connection to the Neckar and is leased by the Gundelsheim sports fishing club. It has an average water depth of around 2.5 m and an area of 3.5 hectares.

history

As early as 771, Böttingen was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex on the occasion of a donation of goods and a chapel (the predecessor of the Michaelskapelle ) by the priest Gotefrit to the Lorsch monastery . Further Böttinger donations to Lorsch were made in 774 and 798. However, the settlement of the place goes back at least to the time of the Romans, as the sacrificial stone in the Michael's chapel and a giant Jupiter column found in 1952 date from Roman times .

Various knights of Bottingen , Buttingen or Bettingen who appeared in documents in the 13th and 14th centuries could come from a family that once formed the local nobility of the place. Like Gundelsheim, Böttingen belonged to Konrad von Horneck in the early 13th century , who gave his possessions to the Coming Horneck of the Teutonic Order around 1250, who owned the place until it was mediatized .

In 1806, Böttingen came to Württemberg like all municipalities of the Kommende and there belonged as an independent place to the Upper Office Neckarsulm . In 1824 the center of the village was flooded meters high when the Neckar flooded.

When the Oberamt Neckarsulm was dissolved in 1938, Böttingen was incorporated into Gundelsheim and has since been part of the Heilbronn district.
