The steamship Børøysund was built in Trondheim in 1908 as Odin . The coastal steamer is Norway's last coal-fired ship today. The combined passenger and tug boat had a cargo hold and a post office.

history

During the First World War, the ship was used by the Norwegian Navy. Equipped with cannons on the foredeck and quarterdeck, the steamer patrolled the Trondheimfjord .

In 1923 the ship was sold to the Hjelma and Herdla steam ship company and operated under the name Skjergar for two years in liner operation between Øygarden and Bergen

In 1925 the ship became the property of the Vesterålen Steamship Company, where the ship was christened with its current name, Børøysund . The ship was used for the local regular service in Lofoten and Vesterålen . The new home port was Stokmarknes . During this time, the Børøysund was rebuilt and modernized. The steamer was given electric lighting and new deck superstructures that housed a smoker's salon for 1st class. In 1935 and 1948 the ship was further modernized.

The Børøysund was in regular service until 1960 when it was finally sold to a school in Melbu on the Vesterålen archipelago. The ship was given a new name again. As a Hyma , the coastal steamer was mainly used as a training ship for aspiring machinists. Courses in navigation were also held on it.

In 1969 the Hyma became the property of the Norsk Veteranskibsklub, which gave the ship the name Børøysund back . The members of the club restored the ship and have been maintaining it ever since. The club offers charter trips and tours and organizes, among other things, so-called open ship events. The ship can also be rented for weddings, birthdays or company celebrations.

The Børøysund was also seen in a number of film clips.

Technology and data

The Børøysund is 33.1 meters long, 5.5 meters wide and has a draft of 2.6 meters. The ship is made of riveted steel. It is approved for 100 passengers. The ship is powered by a triple expansion steam engine ( compound steam engine ) and a coal-fired boiler. Both are original components from 1908. The Børøysund is thus the only certified passenger ship in Norway that operates with an original engine and an original boiler.

The ship reaches a speed of 9 knots and consumes 220 kilograms of coal per hour. 14.2 tons of coal can be stored in the hold.
