Büsch memorial
The Büsch Monument is a monument in Hamburg .
description
The monument consists of an obelisk made of polished sandstone, which rests on a two-tiered base . The obelisk has oak wreaths made of white marble on two sides. A laurel wreath running around between the obelisk and the base is made from this material. The upper part of the base - also made of sandstone - bears reliefs on two sides , one of which shows a bush portrait in profile, the other an allegorical representation in which the merits of the deceased are honored. The lower part of the base is made of granite. It shows laurel wreaths with the year of Büsch's birth and death as well as an inscription with a dedication : To the friend of the fatherland Johann Georg Büsch .
- Relief panels on the base
The allegorical scene shows an ancient libation ceremony held here in honor of the late economist. The boy on the left carries an incense box. He also symbolizes the importance of Busch as an educator and youth teacher. The Hammonia - recognizable by its headdress as an allegory of Hamburg - offers the sacrifice. Behind it the allegory of trade and shipping, which indicates Büsch's services in this area. The young woman holds a ship's rudder with a stick of Mercury in one hand and a leaf hanging in the other. The last figure is a man who symbolizes mathematics and technology, recognizable by the globe (surveying system) and the hammer at his feet.
history
background
The economist and publicist Johann Georg Büsch enjoyed a great reputation in Hamburg, where he had headed the commercial academy that had been founded two years earlier since 1771. Soon after his death on August 5, 1800, considerations arose to erect a memorial in his honor.
Design and construction

On November 20, 1800, the Patriotic Society announced that they had taken over the planning and construction of a bush memorial. The contract for the design and the overall planning was awarded to the architect Johann August Arens .
As early as January 29, 1801, Arens submitted a detailed draft to the Patriotic Society and named the performing artists . The actual memorial body was made by the stonemasons Beckmann and Wittgreff , the portrait of Büsch is the work of the sculptor Ernst Matthaei , and the allegory is by Johann Conrad Wolff .
The Hamburg council made the installation site available. On July 27, 1801 was on the bastion Vincent of Hamburg ramparts reveals (the present site of Hamburger Kunsthalle ), and was thus the first public persons monument of the city.
The relief was only added one year after it was erected.
Another story
In 1828 the memorial had to be moved and ended up on the David Bastion . In 1867 it was relocated again due to the construction of the railway , now on a hill between the Esplanade and Lombard Bridge . In 1921 it was placed under a preservation order. After both the First and the Second World War , stolen parts of the bronze decorations had to be renewed.
In the post-war years, it was moved to the green space between Lombard Bridge and Kennedy Bridge . In 1984, at the instigation of the Patriotic Society, it was set up on a green space on the corner of Edmund-Siemers-Allee and Rothenbaumchaussee in front of the University of Hamburg .
