The Bản Giốc Detian Waterfalls ( Chinese  德 天 - 板 約 瀑布  /  德 天 板 约 瀑布 , Pinyin Détiān-Bǎnyuē Pùbù ) are the world's fourth largest waterfalls on the border between two countries - after the Iguazú , Victoria and the Niagara Falls . They are divided equally in the province of Cao Bằng in Vietnam and in the circle Daxin the city Chongzuo Autonomous Region Guangxi the Zhuang in the People's Republic of China . The river Quy Xuân (Chinese Guichun He ), which belongs to the catchment area of the west river , flows there in a multi-stage cascade 300 meters wide over a height difference of about 53 meters. The river carries the largest amount of water in the months May to September.

The region is mainly inhabited by the Zhuang (or Tay and Nung ), Miao (or Hmong ), Yao (or Dao) and Hoa (or Han ) peoples on both sides of the state border . During the French colonial occupation in the early 1920s, the site was used for recreation and (fish) hunting.

The area is characterized by karst mountains and rice terraces . Not far is the limestone cave Nguom Ngao . Many boarding houses in the country are adorned with the waterfall motif and pictures of the cave.

The waterfall is rarely visited by the Vietnamese side. Only a bamboo bridge facilitates access to the rafts. With them, the waterfall can be explored from both sides of the state. There is no longer a border post today. However, on the Vietnamese side, a viewing permit is required, which can easily be obtained at a police station on the feeder road. There are tourist facilities and a large resort on the Chinese side. Access is not controlled.

As in 25 other places, the Chinese army crossed the border here during the brief Sino-Vietnamese war in February 1979.
