The BBC Campana class , BBC Maine class and BBC Carolina class are three classes of ship with a total of 31 multipurpose heavy lift carriers of a common construction type .
history
The series comprises a total of 31 units, 9 of which belong to the first generation - BBC Campana class -, 15 to the second generation - BBC Maine class - and 7 to the third generation - BBC Carolina class . The ships are all used by the BBC Chartering shipping company, which is based in Leer and belongs to the Briese Group . The ownership structure of the ships is very different; some ships belong to the Briese Schiffahrt, some to the shipping company Bockstiegel in Emden and some to the Beluga successor shipping company Hansa Heavy Lift . At HHL these ships are referred to as F-Series . The ships were delivered between 2004 ( BBC Campana ) and 2011 ( BBC Virginia ).
Technical specifications
All ships have a carrying capacity of about 12,780 dwt . Since the ships were built by different shipyards, there are certain construction tolerances.
Nevertheless, the different generations are largely identical; the only major difference is found in the cranes . While the first generation has 2 × 120-t cranes (combined 240 t) from 2004 to 2007, the second generation was equipped with 2 × 150-t cranes (combined 300 t) from 2007 to 2010, the one from 2007 to Third generation , which was created almost simultaneously in 2011, is equipped with 2 × 180 t cranes (combined 360 t). The cranes come from the manufacturer NMF .
Thanks to the 5,400 kW marine diesel engine from MaK , the maximum speed of this type of ship is around 15 kn . The volume of the hold is 15,952 m³, the tank ceiling is 2,810 m² and can be loaded with up to 16 t / m². This means that the ships are on the threshold between pure multi-purpose freighters and heavy lift freighters , but they are very versatile. With their cranes, they are not dependent on superstructure and the relatively shallow draft of a maximum of 8 m means they can also call at smaller ports.
In addition, 665 TEU , 50 of which are refrigerated containers, can be loaded. The consumption is approx. 27.0 t HFO per day at sea. The ships were classified by Germanischer Lloyd .
The ships can also be found on the Great Lakes in the USA and Canada .
The ships
Many ships were ordered from the Beluga Shipping company . Some of the ships were already sold to other shipping companies before delivery, others only after delivery. The names of the ships are on the left, the current names are on the right.
The BBC Steinhoeft caused a stir when it crossed the Sankt-Lorenz-Seeweg on March 31, 2011 and the entire shipping between the Atlantic and the Great Lakes came to a standstill for ten hours.
