BIMserver ( Open source Building Information Model Server , formerly IFC Server ) is too IFC standards compliant model server for managing building information modeling projects. The server software is free software .

history

The BIMserver software is developed by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research TNO, the Eindhoven University of Technology TU / e, Oracle and a smaller group of programmers consisting of Jakob Beetz, Ruben de Laat, Pim van den Helm and Léon van Berlo , Project manager and founder of the project. The project was formerly called IFC Server .

use

As a collaboration software , BIMserver enables simultaneous engineering , the distributed simultaneous processing of virtual models with programs from different software manufacturers. The software is used in building planning ( architecture, engineering and construction ) and in the real estate industry ( facility management ).

The software can also be used as a product library for product suppliers of building components such as doors, windows or HVAC elements. In addition, the products can be linked as IFC models in building models, with which a distributed building data infrastructure can be implemented.

technology

BIMserver is not a file server , but an object-relational database based on IFC standards . A high-performance Berkeley DB from Oracle is used for this. The abstraction of the software architecture allows future development with other database systems as well.

The software has a model-driven architecture and is programmed in Java , but also uses an IFC engine DLL in C ++ . The DLL functions of the IFC engine have been tested and functional under Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS X on both 32 and 64 bit systems .

Interfaces

Scheme:
BIMserver interfaces

The user, rights and project management and the upload and download of sub and main projects are carried out via a graphical user interface that can be accessed via a web browser. This conforms to the W3C standards. BIMserver has implemented a WebGL viewer to view the models in the browser . The JavaScript library o3d from Google is used for this.

BIMserver has implemented a SOAP interface. As a web service that is Building Information Exchange Protocol (BIM ExPro or short BIEP) used the Sable and oBIX combined. This allows projects to be displayed in desktop software. So z. B. Exchange Autodesk Revit data via plug-in with BIMserver.

For including information from the IFC model in other web applications one is REST interface available. Each IFC object has its own URL and can be called up - either anonymously or password-protected, depending on the declaration.

Functionality

Functions such as document management and workflow are not implemented in BIMserver. There is a BIMserver plug-in for Alfresco for these functions .
