The BLS RBDe 565 , originally RBDe 4/4 of the BLS Group, are railcars of the Swiss railway company BLS AG , which are used with the associated control and intermediate cars as shuttle trains in regional traffic and belong to the group of " private railway NPZ ". From 2021, the trains will be replaced by the latest generation of Stadler Flirt .
Type overview
The RBDe 4/4 were developed by the then BLS group together with the Bodensee-Toggenburg-Bahn (BT). The Federal Office of Transport (SAB) required the coordination of similar procurement needs as a condition for granting federal subsidies. The Chemins de fer fribourgeois Gruyère-Friborg-Morat (GFM) and the Chemin de fer Régional du Val-de-Travers (RVT) joined the procurement group, followed by the EBT group later .
The railcars from BLS and BT are very similar. While the BLS stuck to the traditional standard wagon principle with end entrances, coil springs and block brakes for intermediate and control cars, BT arranged double entrances at the third points and installed air-sprung bogies with disc brakes. GFM and RVT had the railcar equipped with two driver's cabs. The first series came into operation in 1982, following the introduction of the regular timetable. With the two subsequent purchases in 1984/85 and 1991/92, only railcars of the BLS version with a driver's cab were purchased.
Today, this group of vehicles is usually referred to as " Privatbahn-NPZ ". The SBB NPZ (and TRAVYS as well as SOB) are further developments of the private railway NPZ with the following main differences: top speed 140 km / h (instead of 125 km / h), multiple control IIId (command transmitter control instead of characteristic control), no compartment doors (therefore ventilation module on the roof) and modified front.
procurement
The Bern-Neuenburg-Bahn (BN), Gürbetal-Bern-Schwarzenburg-Bahn (GBS) and Spiez-Erlenbach-Zweisimmen-Bahn (SEZ), which were part of the BLS operating group at that time , faced the problem of obsolete vehicle fleets at the end of the 1970s. There were only 24 railcars available to the entire operating community, some of which were over 40 years old.
Because of this outdated vehicle fleet, the BLS operating group ordered a total of 10 commuter train units in 1979. Two of them were ordered in four parts (for the SEZ), five in three parts and three in two parts, but from the start it was planned to use EW I as an intermediate car. The trains were manufactured by BBC (electrical equipment), SWS (control and intermediate cars as well as motor bogies) and SIG (railcar body). The intermediate cars were delivered from autumn 1981, followed by the railcars and control cars in the first half of 1982.
A second series of 8 commuter trains was delivered as early as 1984/85. Changes were only made in details, the lack of aprons is striking from the outside, inside red-covered individual seats were installed instead of blue (for non-smokers) and red (for smokers) covered benches, the partition wall in the 6 intermediate cars reduced the size of the smoking compartment of 5 on 4 windows.
Finally, in 1991/92 a further 4 railcars and control cars came into operation, and a growing fleet of EW I cars with flush doors was now used as intermediate cars.
The rolling stock procured was given the following company numbers:

Changes over time
The merger of BLS, SEZ, GBS and BN created the BLS Lötschbergbahn in 1997 , and in 2006 it merged with RM to form BLS AG .
For the implementation of the “new” S-Bahn Bern from December 2004, 16 second-class “ B Jumbo ” intermediate cars were procured. First there was a prototype B 600, which was converted from two EW I cars. The series version B 601–615 was only created from an EW I for the ends, the middle section was rebuilt and received an adapted roof shape. Another ten such cars, B 616–625, were ordered in 2005 for further capacity expansion. The RM (B 520-524) also procured 5 cars for use with the RBDe 4/4 II .
The implementation of the new corporate identity of BLS is reflected in the successive repainting of the vehicles, from the old color scheme (blue-crème) to the new (silver-blue with lime green doors and fronts). The repainting began in November 2003 and 21 trains (including the 15 intermediate cars) had been treated by December 2006, the twenty-second (734-987) was repainted after a fire in April 2007.
The “Compact” refit and comfort enhancement program was launched at BLS at the beginning of 2009, in which the RBDe 565 pendulums are also comprehensively upgraded. The measures in detail:
- Completely renewed interior
- New 31 instead of 24 1st class seats ( seat divider 2 + 2 instead of 2 + 1) in the ABt control car
- Enlarged multi-purpose area in the ABt control car (instead of the toilet)
- Air conditioning control car ABt
- Destination display in every interior (commissioning later)
- Video surveillance
- Network plan at eye level for each entry area, newspaper box, large waste bin and train order
- Uniform addresses and pictograms on and in the vehicles
- Technical conservation measures; the vehicles will be in use for another 15 to 20 years
