The U3q type tram cars were 88 vehicles that were put into service between 1908 and 1913 as sidecars for the Berlin City Trams (SSB) and the Berlin Electric Trams (BESTAG). In 1924/25 these were converted into railcars by the National Automobile Society (NAG) in Berlin-Oberschöneweide and the previously open entry platforms were closed. From 1934 the vehicles were carried under the type designation T 08/24 . A 1933 mover carriage converted railcar was named TE 24.08 S .

development

Order

Sidecar 89 of the urban trams in Berlin in the north depot (Kniprodestrasse), around 1910

In 1908 the newly founded SSB ordered the first twelve sidecars for operation. In their basic structure, they were similar to the associated four-axle maximum railcars , but unlike these, they were two-axle and had two fewer side windows on each side. The interior structure, made of mahogany paneling, brass rods and upholstered seats arranged sideways with folding arms, was largely identical. The exterior was painted in ocher yellow with the words "Strassenbahnen der Stadt Berlin", the car numbers and the Berlin city arms . The car body consisted of an oak frame that rested on a wooden base frame reinforced with iron. The standing sheets were riveted.

The constant expansion of the SSB network led to further orders in 1909, 1910, 1911 and 1913, so that in the end 78 sidecars were available. Initially numbered continuously with the railcar according to the time of delivery, the sidecars 29–41, 50–59 and 78–89 of the first three delivery series in 1919 were given the new wagon numbers 144–178. The numbers that became available were given to newly delivered railcars.

At the same time, BESTAG also ordered ten sidecars that were similar to those of the SSB. They have been numbered 83-92.

With the merger of SSB, BESTAG and GBS , the cars were given new car numbers in 1920. The SSB sidecars were led under the number series 1588–1665, those of BESTAG under the number series 1715–1724.

modification

The newly created Berlin tram (BSt) had a very mixed fleet of different companies. In addition to ordering new cars, the operator also pursued the standardization of electrical equipment. Older railcars as well as those from smaller companies were therefore mainly converted into sidecars or work cars or taken out of service. Newer sidecars, however, have mostly been converted into railcars. In addition to the vehicles described here, this also affected the 1913 design of the GBS.

The vehicles were fundamentally rebuilt by NAG Oberschöneweide in 1924/25. They were given an underframe similar to the U3l car , which was firmly connected to the car body with the wheelbase increased to 2.8 meters in order to give the vehicles additional stability. The types USL 253 with 33.5 kilowatts and USL 323 with 45 kilowatts from AEG were installed as drive motors . The type designation was now U3q , whereby the U stands for conversion and the q for transverse seats. The numbers ran from 3251 II to 3337 II and 3102 II for the prototype. In 1927 the carriages 3102 II and 3300 II –3337 II were given the numbers 3212 II –3250 II in order to be able to keep the car numbers from 3300 free for the rifle car ordered in the same year .

For new car series to be procured, some vehicles were equipped with cardan drives, but unsuccessfully. Car 3231 II was converted into a one-way car in 1933. The left platform doors were closed and the doors on the right were enlarged. The transfer doors were replaced by telescopic sliding doors that were later used in series in the U4 conversion cars . The drive switch was placed on the side and a driver's seat was installed. The car received the type designation TE 08/24 S in 1934 and was used almost exclusively on Westring Line 7. It was retired around 1950.

Whereabouts

After the Second World War , there were still 68 railcars in the inventory. Four cars were retired in 1938, presumably as a result of accident damage. 14 wagons were lost in the war. When the administration of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe was separated, 53 cars remained with BVG-West and 15 cars with BVG-East.

BVG-West had to pull all wagons with wooden superstructures out of passenger traffic by 1955. 40 vehicles continued to be used as work cars, rail grinding cars and tower cars until the 1960s. The wagon number of the A 353 work vehicle cannot be determined, however.

BVG-Ost converted its vehicles in the 1950s and replaced the lantern roof with a barrel roof, the line number boxes were firmly integrated into the roof edge. Some wagons now have three large side windows due to the elimination of window pillars. Between 1955 and 1959, the cars were given to the companies in Cottbus , Dessau , Zwickau and the Schöneiche tram to streamline the vehicle fleet . The two wagons handed over to Zwickau continued to Görlitz in 1960 . In these cities, most of the cars were still in use until 1972 and almost all of them were then scrapped.

Of the 88 converted wagons in Dessau, one car body (No. 37 III ) has been preserved as part of a sheepfold.

The following table gives an overview of all the converted wagons, their wagon numbers and their whereabouts after 1945. The former BESTAG sidecars with wagon numbers 83 to 92 have a dark gray background for better emphasis.
