The BVG no. 5050 and 5051 are electro-diesel locomotive , the 1989 by Kaelble Gmeinder and Siemens for the Berlin Transport Authority (BVG were built). The factory designation is Gmeinder E / DE 110. The locomotives have an electric drive, which is designed for the direct voltage of the Berlin busbars of 750 volts, as well as a diesel-electric drive . Its original purpose was the conversion of S-Bahn - trains .

The vehicles had the company numbers 5050 and 5051 at the BVG . They came to Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) via S-Bahn-Berlin GmbH . There they were added to the class 478. This means that they fall into the category of all service vehicles on the Berlin S-Bahn, regardless of the drive system.

At the DB they had the company numbers 478 601-8 and 478 602-6. They were also used outside of their original area of ​​responsibility. The 478 602-6 was retired in 2005. In 2009 both locomotives were sold to the Havelländische Eisenbahn (hvle).

At least one of the vehicles is now on the premises of the Voith company in the port of Kiel.
