Mohammad Sadli

Mohammad Sadli (born June 10, 1922 in Sumedang , Indonesia ; † January 8, 2008 in Jakarta ) was an Indonesian economist and politician who, as a member of the so-called "Berkeley Mafia", was one of the "economic architects" of the era of the "New Order" ( Orde Baru ) and was a minister several times.

Life

Mohammad Sadli initially studied engineering at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta , which he graduated in 1952. He then completed a postgraduate course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1956 with a Master of Science (M.Sc.) and then completed another postgraduate course at the University of California, Berkeley , which he completed in 1957. After his return he was director of the Economic and Social Research Institute of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Indonesia between 1957 and 1962 , during which time he obtained a doctorate in economics. After he was prorector of the University of Indonesia between 1962 and 1963, he took over a professorship at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Indonesia in 1963. During this time, he also took on a visiting professorship at Harvard University in 1964 . In 1966 he was also chairman of the Association of Economists (Ikatan Sarjana Ekonomi Indonesia)

After President Suharto took office on March 21, 1967, he was chairman of the newly created investment coordination committee (Komite Teknis untuk Investasi) and held this office until he was replaced by Barli Halim in 1973. After a reshuffle of the first presidential government Suharto (Pembangunan I) on September 9 In 1971 he replaced Mursalin Daeng Mamangung as Minister of Labor (Menteri Tenaga Kerja) and held this post until March 28, 1973, when Subroto succeeded him. After the formation of the second presidential government Suharto (Pembangunan II) , he succeeded Sumantri Brodjonegoro as Mining Minister (Menteri Pertambangan) on March 28, 1973 and held this ministerial office until March 29, 1978, after which Subroto was again his successor. As a member of the so-called "Berkeley Mafia", he was one of the "economic architects" of the era of the "New Order" ( Orde Baru ) .

After leaving the government, Sadli was an advisor to the Indonesian development bank BAPINDO (Bank Pembangunan Indonesia) in 1978 and then in 1979 president of the transport airline PT Air Indonesia Transport and president of the company PT Aneka Tambang . He was then a board member from 1980 to 1982 and then president of PT Tifico in 1982 , before being secretary general of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kamar Dagang dan Industri Indonesia) between 1982 and 1985 .

Sadli was married to Saparinah Sadli , a women activist and psychologist at Universitas Indonesia, who was also a member of the national human rights commission Komnas HAM .

He died at the age of 85 in Cikini Hospital in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
