BYK Additives & Instruments is a global supplier of additives and measuring instruments.
BYK Additive's areas of application include the paint, printing inks, plastics and oil / gas industries. BYK additives are also used in the manufacture of care products, in the manufacture of adhesives and sealants, and in construction chemistry. The Instruments division (BYK-Gardner GmbH) develops measuring devices for assessing the color, appearance and physical properties of paints , plastics and paper surfaces. BYK is one of four business areas in the ALTANA Group .
BYK Additives & Instruments has around 2,300 employees worldwide, around 850 of them in Wesel. According to the company, sales in 2019 were around one billion euros. Almost 90% of sales are generated abroad, particularly in neighboring European countries, the USA and the Asian market.
history
In 1873 Heinrich Byk founded a chemical factory under his name in Berlin, where he initially produced sleeping pills. In 1917 the company merged with the dye and tanning works to form Byk-Guldenwerke AG ; later the photochemical factory Ernst Lomberg was added. The first BYK additive for coatings came onto the market in 1935. It ensured that pigments in paints could be evenly distributed. BYK founded the Wesel site in 1962 , where it began producing paint and plastic additives. The company has production facilities in Germany (Wesel, Kempen , Moosburg an der Isar , Schkopau and Geretsried ), in the Netherlands ( Deventer , Nijverdal and Denekamp ), in Great Britain ( Widnes ), in the USA ( Wallingford , Chester , Gonzales , Louisville , Earth City and Pampona Beach) as well as in China ( Tongling ).
