Baarburg

The Baarburg is a free-standing, very densely forested hill in the municipality of Baar , east of the main town of the same name in Switzerland . The approximately 13 hectare summit plateau is 683 meters above sea level.

Surname

The name Baarburg was first mentioned in 1348 as "Barreburg" and goes back to the Celtic word barros , which means something like peak, hill or mountain. The speaking municipal coat of arms of Baar shows, among other things, the "Baarburg".

Archaeological finds

In the years 1994–1999 the Baarburg was examined for earlier settlements. Finds point to a total of seven different settlements that are said to have existed there in a period from the Middle Bronze Age (from 1550 BC) to the early Middle Ages (around 700 AD). Among other things, ceramic shards, organic remains, traces of fire and devices could be detected.

Flora and fauna

The Baarburg is a mixed forest, the native fauna includes deer , rabbits , squirrels , foxes , frogs and many species of birds. The badger is also settling back in its old home.

Furthermore, the Lorze flows from Unterägeri in the direction of Baar next to the Baarburg. The famous Höllgrotten are also located on the Lorze .

Landfill

Between 1964 and 1981, operating just behind the Baarburg Hill, on Baarburg Rank (also called "Güselrank" called) the Neuheimerstrasse, the cantonal waste landfill Baarburg . During this time around 2 million m 3 of rubbish from the Zug and nearby Zurich communities was deposited there.

Landfill leachate and gases repeatedly cause major problems and endanger, among other things, the drinking water tunnel of the Zurich water supply, which runs under the landfill area. In 2002 an overall concept for a comprehensive renovation was drawn up. At the moment (summer 2007) extensive exploration work is in progress.
