Babar - King of the Elephants is a Canadian - French - German cartoon from 1999. It was made by the studios Nelvana Limited , Home Made Movie , TMO Loonland Film and The Clifford Ross Company and directed by Raymond Jafelice . The film premiered on February 26, 1999 in Canada. The German premiere was on May 20, 1999. The film is based on the children's books about the Elephant King Babar by Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff.

As an elephant child, Babar has to witness his mother being shot by a big game hunter. He can escape and wander around until he comes to a city after a long hike. Here he meets people and after a few adventures is taken in by an old lady. From then on she takes care of Babar, clothes him and raises him like a human child. She teaches Babar to read, write and arithmetic and teaches him music. Babar grows into a modern, socially acceptable elephant.
As an adult elephant, Babar meets his childhood sweetheart Celeste, who has followed him into town. He returns with her to the jungle, where he pacifies the conflict with the rhinos under King Rataxes and is finally crowned king of the elephants. He marries Celeste and with her founds a human-model elephant town called Celesteville.
