Babatunde Osotimehin (born February 6, 1949 in what is now the state of Ogun ; † June 4, 2017 in West Harrison , New York ) was a Nigerian doctor and politician who served as Nigeria's Minister of Health between 2008 and 2010 and was the executive director of the Population Fund from 2011 until his death United Nations (UNFPA) with the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations .

Life

After attending school, Osotimehin began studying medicine at the University of Ibadan , graduating in 1972. In 1979 he earned a doctorate in medicine from the University of Birmingham and, on his return to Nigeria in 1980, took over a professorship at the University of Ibadan, where he was also head of the department of clinical pathology . In 1990 he became Provost of the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan. He served in 2007 as chairman of the National Action Committee Against between July 2002 and March AIDS (National Action Committee on AIDS) and was there for his merits in December 2005 with the Officer's Cross of the Order of the Niger excellent. From March 2007 to December 2008 he was Director General of the National Agency for the Control of HIV and AIDS , which coordinates all measures against HIV and AIDS in Nigeria. In addition, he served temporarily as chair of the Global Agenda Council for the Demographic Dividend of the World Economic Forum and as co-chair of the reference group for family planning 2020.

On December 17, 2008, Osotimehin was appointed Nigeria's Minister of Health by President Goodluck Jonathan to succeed Adenike Grange and held this office until March 17, 2010, when Onyebuchi Chukwu became his successor. On January 1, 2011, he succeeded Soraya Obaid as Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and in 2015 was appointed for a second term. In this role he dealt with the implementation of the results of the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994 . After his unexpected death on June 4, 2017, Deputy Executive Director for Programs Natalia Kanem was appointed acting Executive Director of UNFPA by UN Secretary General António Guterres .

Babatunde Osotimehin was married and had five children.
