Babette Michel (* 1965 in Weimar ) is a German East Africa expert and radio - journalist . In addition to her work for various radio stations, she became known for being awarded the Civis Media Prize in 2001 and nominations for the European Media Prize Prix Europa in 2013 and 2014.

Life and work

Michel attended the Friedrich Schiller High School in Weimar until 1983, where she graduated from high school. Until 1987 she studied African and English studies at the University of Leipzig with a focus on linguistics and translation studies in Swahili and English. Towards the end of her studies she worked as an interpreter for tour groups from Tanzania and Zimbabwe. She wrote her diploma thesis on the subject of the development of the terminology of Swahili in the field of literary theory .

After completing her studies, she worked from 1987 to 1991 as a presenter, reporter and editor for Swahili at Radio Berlin International in their East Berlin Africa editorial team. After that, she worked for about 2 years as a presenter and editor in the field of current politics at MDR 1 Radio Thuringia and at the youth radio DT 64 in Berlin. Since 1993 she has been working as a freelance radio journalist and Africa expert for WDR 3 , WDR 5 , WDR Funkhaus Europa , Deutschlandfunk , MDR and BR, among others . For the Africa editorial team of Deutsche Welle , she worked frequently on East Africa topics in Swahili, particularly from 1993 to 1996.

As a press spokeswoman , the qualified Africanist was in charge of the Rudolstadt International Dance and Folk Festival in 1995 , which in that year had a focus on South Africa. She returned there annually as WDR music editor and presenter for TFF recordings and live concerts. Occasionally she has worked as a translator or interpreter for Swahili. She understands and sometimes speaks other foreign languages ​​such as Spanish, Russian, Turkish and French.

She completed a three-year training as a breath therapist and awareness trainer.

At Deutschlandfunk she works as a director and music editor for the weekly programs "Faces Europe" and "Sonntagsspaziergang" and as a writer for the DLF feature.

Babette Michel has two children and lives in Bergisch Gladbach .
