from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baby Huey (born August 17, 1944 in Richmond , Indiana as James T. Ramey , † October 28, 1970 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American rock and soul singer . His stage name goes back to the comic figure of the same name from Paramount Pictures .

Ramey was the front man of the group Baby Huey & The Babysitters, active from the mid-1960s . Even before the recording work for the debut album was finished, Ramey, known for his drug addiction and extreme obesity , died on October 28, 1970 in a motel as a result of a heart attack at the age of 26.

Posthumously, The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend was released in 1971, an album which, in addition to two of Ramey's own compositions, included several cover versions of songs from the repertoire of Curtis Mayfield , who was also the producer . In addition, pieces of music by Sam Cooke and The Mamas & the Papas as well as pure instrumental tracks were to be found on the album. The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend is now considered to be a significant influence on the development of hip-hop music. The song Hard Times in particular was sampled by a variety of artists , including A Tribe Called Quest , DJ Shadow , The Game , Ghostface Killah , Ice Cube , Lil Wayne , The Notorious BIG , Public Enemy and Swizz Beatz . On the 2010 collaboration album Wake Up! A cover of The Roots and John Legend is included.
