Close up view

The brook spade moss ( Scapania undulata ) or wavy spade moss is a liverwort - species of the order Lophoziales .

features

The brook spade moss grows in green, sometimes red-brown to brown-black lawns. The sturdy stems are 4 millimeters wide and up to 10 centimeters long. The leaves are bilobed, with larger, obovate lower lobes and 1/2 to 2/3 as large, rounded, rectangular to oval upper lobes, these do not or only slightly overlap the stem. The lower lobe clearly runs down the trunk, but the upper lobe does not. The leaf margins of both leaf lobes are whole or toothed towards the tip.

The round, polygonal leaf cells are about 20 to 30 µm in size in the middle of the leaf. Cell corners are not or only rarely thickened. There are 2 to 5 oil bodies per cell, which are composed of numerous tiny oil droplets.

The plants are diocesan .

Distribution and locations

The brook spade moss occurs in parts of the northern hemisphere. In Central Europe it is common and widespread in mountainous areas, and rare in low areas.

The species grows in sunny to moderately shady, wet or at least damp, lime-free locations, often submerged in water, preferably on rocks in streams or at waterfalls. In addition, swampy soils are settled, rarely lime-free soil and rotten wood.
