In 1723 Johann Sebastian Bach was introduced to his office as Director musices (and Thomaskantor ), many of his cantatas, the St. John Passion and parts of the Christmas Oratorio were heard for the first time in St.

When Günther Ramin took office as Thomaskantor in 1940, the Thomaner left the Nikolaikirche. Since then, the management of the choir has been one of the official duties of the incumbent Nikolaikantor. From 1959 Wolfgang Hofmann took over the management. In 1993 Jürgen Wolf was elected to the office of Nikolaikantor. In order to make the population more aware of the Nikolaikirche as Bach Church , he suggested that the choir be renamed BachChor Leipzig , which took place in spring 2006. The main task of the choir is to organize the services in the Nikolaikirche, and several choir concerts take place every year.

The focus of the musical work is on the oratorio . In addition to the annual performances of Bach's Christmas Oratorio and one of his passions, the Requiem scores by Mozart and Brahms are regularly performed. The choir's repertoire includes Bach's B minor Mass and Handel's Messiah.

In the field of a cappella music, the Bach choir mainly deals with the motets by Brahms, Bruckner and Mendelssohn , but also with modern choral literature and the like. a. by Hugo Distler , Benjamin Britten and John Rutter . In 2009 the choir took part in the world premiere of the work Beatitudes by Enjott Schneider .
