Jürgen Wolf (born July 20, 1961 in Bad Mergentheim ) is a German organist and conductor . In 1993 he was appointed cantor and organist at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig and worked there until February 2019. Since then he has mainly worked as a guest conductor.

Life

Wolf studied organ and musicology in Würzburg and Heidelberg and worked in organ building. In Vienna he completed his studies in Protestant church music with the A-exam . During his studies he dealt intensively with historical performance practice , in particular with the interpretation of Bach's music. In 1992 he obtained his Magister artium . Numerous courses and private studies completed his education. From 1993 to 2019 Wolf worked as cantor and organist at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig , where Johann Sebastian Bach worked in the same position. He was officially removed from office on February 3, 2019.

Wolf is also active as a composer and guest conductor of various ensembles and orchestras as well as a concert organist at national and international festivals (USA, Japan, Ukraine) and in radio and film productions. In 1999 he was awarded first prize in the composition competition “Geistliches Lied” in Bayreuth. As a guest lecturer for organ and harpsichord, he teaches at international master classes. He initiated the organ renewal of the large Ladegast organ in the Nikolaikirche through sponsorship.

Jürgen Wolf was artistic director of the Leipzig Bach Choir until 2019 . In 2008 he founded the Leipzig Festival Orchestra .
