Bacillus megaterium is a gram-positive , peritrichy flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium . With a cell width of 2 µm and a cell length of 5 µm, it is considered a "giant" among the eubacteria . The bacterium grows under aerobic conditions and is oxidase- negative and catalase- positive. Like all bacteria from the genus Bacillus , B. megaterium is an endospore generator . Bacterial colonies from B. megaterium showa yellowish color on culture media . B. megaterium is a possible alternative to Escherichia coli for the industrial production of recombinant proteins .

In 1926, the French scientist Maurice Lemoigne discovered and isolated polyhydroxybutyric acid (PHB) from cells of B. megaterium .
