The Back Mesa is a 740 m high, ice-covered table mountain with rocky outcrops on the West Antarctic James Ross Island . It rises east of Hidden Lake on the Ulu Peninsula .
Following geological work by the British Antarctic Survey between 1985 and 1986, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named him after Eric Hatfield Back (1920-1999), Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve and medical officer during Operation Tabarin on the stations in the port Lockroy (1943-1944) and Hope Bay (1944-1945).
