The station Alsfeld (Oberhess) is a through station at kilometer 60.3 of the Vogelsberg Railway and 0.0 in 1988 disused railway line Niederaula-Alsfeld . The station building at Bahnhofstrasse 14, built in 1914/15, is a protected monument .

history

In 1868 the Second Chamber of the Grand Duchy of Hesse decided to build the "Upper Hessian Railway" (today's Vogelsberg Railway ) from Gießen via Alsfeld to Fulda . The official opening of the station took place with the opening of the Grünberg –Alsfeld section on July 29, 1870. Until October 30 of the same year, the train station was the end of the trains from Gießen when the next section to Lauterbach was opened. The Vogelsbergbahn was completed on July 31, 1871, so that the regional centers of Gießen and Fulda could now be reached by train without changing trains.

When the Niederaula – Alsfeld (Gründchenbahn) railway was added, the old station building was demolished and replaced in 1914/15 by today's neoclassical building. The railway systems were also rebuilt and considerably expanded.

Passenger traffic in the direction of Niederaula was discontinued in 1974, until 1988 there was still freight traffic on this route between Alsfeld and Eifa . In the 2000s, most of the freight transport systems at the station that were no longer needed were dismantled and the station building was renovated in 2006.

In September 2009, DB CEO Rüdiger Grube announced that Deutsche Bahn would expand the Vogelsbergbahn by 2011 with a total of 24.6 million euros from economic stimulus program II . The modernization work lasted from mid-June 2010 to summer 2011.

Since the timetable change 2011/2012 on 11 December 2011, the passenger is the Hessian national course GmbH (HLB) with diesel railcars of the type LINT 41 settled.

Since the 2016/2017 timetable change on December 11, 2016, the trains of the Vogelsbergbahn and the subsequent Lahntalbahn have been running continuously as RB 45 instead of the previous RB 25 (Lahntalbahn) or RB 35 (Vogelsbergbahn).

The station can be divided into a passenger station and a freight station . Despite major dismantling measures in the 2000s, it has quite extensive track systems.

A first station building was built in 1869/70 by the Oberhessische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft together with the railway line . It was a simple, but by the standards of the time quite large building. In 1914 and 1915, this was replaced by a much larger and more representative building, which is now a listed building. This was made necessary by the construction of the line to Niederaula, as the old station building would have become too small. Today the “VGO Service Center” is housed here.

Signal box

The Alsfeld signal box of the type E 43/50 was built in 1968. It is still manned by a dispatcher and bears the abbreviation "Af".

Tracks and platforms

Alsfeld station has three platform tracks. Track 1 is on the 183-meter-long house platform , tracks 2 and 3 on a 191-meter-long central platform . The height of both platforms is 76 cm, which makes boarding a train easier. The central platform can be reached via an underpass , but it is not barrier-free . There is a rarely used siding next to the platform tracks .

To the south of the passenger station there are numerous freight, loading and stabling tracks, some of which are still in use. However, since the dismantling measures in recent years, these have only been stump tracks and can only be reached from the north. Since then, only the three platform tracks can still be used from both directions.
