The Immensee station is besides Küssnacht and Merlischachen one of the three passenger stations and -haltepunkte on the territory of the district Küssnacht in the Swiss canton of Schwyz. It is located in the village of Immensee and is best known as kilometer zero of the Gotthard Railway .

history

The station was inaugurated on June 1, 1882, when the Gotthard Railway to Chiasso was opened to traffic. At the same time, the Aargau Southern Railway's route to Rotkreuz created a connection to the rest of Switzerland's rail network. However, the access route from Lucerne was set back in accordance with a new contract in 1879 and could not be put into operation until 1897. Immensee is considered to be the start of the Gotthard Railway; kilometer zero is located on the station premises , which is also marked with a stone. Not only the Gotthard Railway's kilometers are based on Immensee, but also those of the Giubiasco – Locarno and Cadenazzo – Luino lines (section between Cadenazzo and the national border) are calculated from Immensee. In 1909 the Gotthard Railway was taken over by the SBB , and the station has been their property ever since.

Reception building and facility

The small reception building is kept in a pinkish-red touch, a similar color scheme that can also be found at the Arth-Goldau and Brunnen train stations . However, the station is no longer occupied, the former counter and signal box is used by a florist as a shop. The Immensee station has a total of four tracks, with track 1 being embedded in the side platform to track 2 and not clearly numbered. There is a central platform between tracks 3 and 4, which is connected to the station building via an underpass. The use of the underpass is mandatory for all platform changes. There are no ramps, just stairs.

Passenger traffic is usually handled according to a fixed scheme:

  • Track 2: Trains in the direction of Küssnacht – Lucerne
  • Track 3: Trains from Lucerne – Küssnacht in the direction of Arth-Goldau (–Brunnen)
  • Platform 4: trains that run to / from Rotkreuz (in both directions)

traffic

Although Immensee is the official starting point of the Gotthard Railway, its importance in terms of transport technology was and is relatively small. Important functions, such as changing locomotives or stopping international long-distance trains, benefited the neighboring Rotkreuz and Arth-Goldau stations from the start . In the course of the two-year closure (1997–1999) of the Lucerne – Immensee railway line , all traffic on the Gotthard axis was routed via Rotkreuz. During this time, the express trains stopped in Immensee every two hours so that the Küssnacht district would not lose its connection to the long-distance network. After the reopening, the trains continued to stop because the Gotthard trains kept the route via Rotkreuz due to the higher speed limit, but the stop was lifted at the beginning of the 2000s. The regional trains of the Aargau Southern Railway from Olten, which ran through to Arth-Goldau, also fell victim to the pen.

Long-distance transport

The station has not been served by long-distance trains since the beginning of the 21st century, after the stop of the two-hour Gotthard express trains from Basel to Chiasso was canceled. In the event of disruptions and construction work on the Lucerne – Küssnacht – Immensee route, the Voralpen-Express will be diverted via Rotkreuz - at these times, Immensee is an alternative stop for Küssnacht.

Regional traffic

The station is served every hour by an S-Bahn line that runs between Lucerne and Brunnen. Due to the various lane points between Lucerne and Immensee, the scheduled crossing of these trains takes place at Immensee station. In addition, there are individual train pairs to Rotkreuz and Zurich HB during the working day rush hour , which run on parts of the Aargau Southern Railways. At the other times there is no longer any regional rail passenger transport to Rotkreuz.
