The Rijeka train station ( Croatian : Željeznički kolodvor Rijeka ) is located in the immediate vicinity of the port of Rijeka ( Fiume ). The operator of the station, which opened in 1873, is the Croatian Railways (HŽ).

history

As a result of the Hungarian-Croatian Compromise of 1868, the Free City of Fiume received a special status in the state union of Croatia with Hungary in May 1870 , and the expansion of the port of Rijeka as the main trading port for the Kingdom of Hungary was further accelerated in the following years. In 1873 the railway lines from Budapest via Zagreb and Karlovac as well as from Vienna via Ljubljana and St. Peter in Carniola to Rijeka were completed and the station opened. In 1874 there was a direct rail connection to Trieste .

In 1882 one of the first oil refineries in Europe was established in Rijeka, and during the 1880s the port and train station were expanded to include several warehouses. The current station building was built between 1889 and 1891 according to plans by the Budapest architect Ferenc Pfaff , who built a total of 14 station buildings in the Hungarian countries. The elegant building, built in the classicism style, consists of an almost 200 m long single-storey arcade structure, a two-storey central reception hall and two side end structures. The reception building is now a listed building because of its architectural value. In 1899, Rijeka received an electric tram that connected the station and the individual parts of the city.

After the First World War, the city was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy and the station became a border station owned by the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane . After the Second World War, the station was part of the Yugoslav Railways (JŽ) network and since 1991 the station has been part of the Croatian Railways (HŽ) network.
