history

The importance of the port of Rijeka as a seaport and transshipment point, as well as a trade and economic center began - as did the port of Trieste - with the establishment of the free port by Emperor Charles VI. of Austria in 1719.

In 1867, as a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, Rijeka came to the Hungarian half of the empire as a royal free city and received several railway lines to Vienna and Budapest with the Rijeka station in 1873 . By 1913, the port of Rijeka had developed into one of the ten largest and most important ports in Europe as the only major port in Hungary .

Due to a series of political changes between 1919 and 1989, the port was able to maintain its former prosperity with difficulty, but has been expanding its trade considerably since the end of the Croatian War . Mainly companies from the southern German and Austrian economic centers use the relatively short trade route via Rijeka to the Middle and Far East .

present

Austria received a free port in 2000 and Hungary in 2001. With this measure, various companies from the two countries are currently opening new locations in Rijeka.

The port has several terminals for mineral oil, general cargo, bulky goods and containers, as well as a passenger terminal for ferry traffic.

The operator of the port of Rijeka also operates the port of Bršica on the southwest coast of the Istrian peninsula .
