The Shimizu Station ( Jap. 清水駅 , Shimizu-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshu , operated by the railway company JR Central . It is located in Shizuoka Prefecture in the field of city Shizuoka , more precisely in the district Shimizu-ku .

description

Shimizu is a through station and former separation station on the Tōkaidō main line operated by JR Central , one of the most important railway lines in Japan. Seven pairs of trains on the Fujikawa express train ( ふ じ か わ ), which connects Shizuoka with Fuji and Kofu , stop daily . Regional trains run between Atami and Shizuoka three to six times an hour, depending on the section of the route and the time of day .

The station is in the Masagochō district, on the northern edge of the port. The facility is oriented from north to south and has four tracks, two of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on a partially covered central platform . There is also a siding on the southeast side. The station building has the shape of a riding station , which spans the entire system and at the same time connects the western and eastern station forecourt. Around two dozen bus routes operated by Shizutetsu Justline operate from the bus terminals located there . There is also a ferry connection from a nearby harbor basin across Suruga Bay to Izu .

In 2016 the station counted an average of 10,705 passengers a day. About half a kilometer to the south is Shin-Shimizu station , the eastern terminus of the Shizuoka-Shimizu line .

history

The state railway administration opened the station on February 1, 1889, together with the Shizuoka - Kōzu section of the Tōkaidō main line (part of which corresponds to today's Gotemba line ). At first the station was named Ejiri ( 江 尻 ). It was named after the Ejiri-juku , a post office on the historic Tōkaidō Street. With the opening of the Shimizuko line branching off to the port on July 10, 1916 (initially only for goods traffic), the station developed into a traffic junction. It was given its current name on December 1, 1934. From 1929 to 1974 the Shimizu tram passed the station.

The Ministry of Railways introduced passenger transport on the Shimizuko line on December 1, 1944. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways shut down the container terminal, which had only existed for a few years, on January 16, 1984 and concentrated this activity in the Higashi-Shizuoka station. The shutdown of the Shimizuko line took place on April 1 of the same year, on November 1, 1986 the baggage check was also stopped. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the ownership of the new company JR Central on April 1, 1987 . JR Freight operational by August 2001 a siding to the east of the station located oil tank storage company Tonen General Sekiyu , by April 2002 sporadically wagonload .
