Tōnen General Sekiyu KK ( Japanese 東 燃 ゼ ネ ラ ル 石油 株式会社 , Tōnen Zeneraru Sekiyu Kabushiki kaisha , English TonenGeneral Sekiyu KK ) was a Japanese mineral oil company . It operated the Esso , Mobil and General ( ゼ ネ ラ ル ) gas station brands in Japan. In addition, Tonen Chemical produced olefins , aromatics and butanone, and NUC Corporation produced polyethylene resins. Until 2012 TonenGeneral was involved in Toray Tonen Specialty Separator Godo Kaisha (TKGK), a manufacturer of microporous separator films for lithium-ion batteries .

TonenGeneral was part of ExxonMobil as ExxonMobil Japan Group (ExxonMobil Yugen Kaisha) until 2012 . Since then, ExxonMobil has had a minority stake of 22%. The ExxonMobil Japan Group was formed in 2000 through the merger of Esso Sekiyu, Mobil Sekiyu, Tonen, Tonen Chemical and General Sekiyu.

The company was founded in 1893 by the Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony) and the Vacuum Oil in Japan. In 2016, a merger between Tōnen General and JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation was decided, which was completed in 2017. The merged company operates as JXTG Holdings .
