The Bahnhofsanlage Wandlitzsee with bathing area is a monument ensemble in the district Wandlitzsee the community Wandlitz . It was completed in 1928 and consists of the two-story station building, a large terrace connected to the southwest with an outside staircase, symmetrically flanked by pergola paths. These paths lead past a paved station forecourt on the right and left, are interrupted by Prenzlauer Chaussee (the local section of federal road 109 ) and then continue to the Wandlitzer See . This is followed by a spacious lido with a beach café that was opened in 1923.

The ensemble, built according to plans by the architect and director of the Berlin School of Applied Arts Wilhelm Wagner , is part of the New Objectivity style . It is a listed building and in the official list is called Wandlitzsee station with reception building, shops, car shed, petrol station and pergolas . The station was built for the Heidekrautbahn , which belongs to the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn -AG (NEB), and is served by trains of the RB 27 every hour in the direction of Berlin-Karow and Klosterfelde, and every two hours beyond Klosterfelde to Groß Schönebeck. During the week, additional trains run to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen in the mornings and afternoons .

history

The Seebad ( lido ), which opened in 1923, on the shores of the Wandlitzer See , quickly became a crowd puller. Because individual motorization was only just beginning, the NEB line that went into operation in 1901 between Berlin-Wilhelmsruh and Groß Schönebeck served as an important feeder for those looking for relaxation. The Wandlitzsee train station, which opened in 1905 as a demand stop, therefore had to be expanded into a representative train station. The railway management and the Wandlitz community board were able to win the lido architect for the new project. Wagner succeeded in summarizing all modern ideas of a reception area at an excursion destination at the gates of Berlin in his station design. Even the trunk road was integrated into his plans, which was given a uniform surface structure in this area between 1924 and 1926 with a new small pavement .

Work on the various buildings was carried out between 1923 and 1928, and the station building was officially opened in 1928. The forecourt served as access for carriages and motor vehicles.

Description of the structure after completion

Eastern side of the train station

All parts of the building ensemble are bricked and clinkered . They are assigned to the New Objectivity .

  • The station building (area around 40 meters × 15 meters) had a waiting room, luggage storage facilities, a vestibule and three ticket offices. The railway technology is located in separate rooms in the building. The western wing of the house was designed to accommodate a train station restaurant, that is, it offered guest rooms, a kitchen wing and sanitary facilities. There was a protective roof between the station building and the edge of the platform. The two upper floors housed service apartments and administration rooms of the railway company.
  • The walkways between the station building and the beach café are laid out with square pillars, each five meters apart and about six meters wide, and loosely roofed with wooden planks. They consist of clinker brickwork, are covered with trees and trees have been planted on the sides.
  • The station forecourt is around 30 meters by 25 meters and covered with small cobblestones .
  • On both sides of the pergolas on the station forecourt, there are low-rise buildings as sales facilities, about 25 meters (along the street) and 15 meters (down). They housed grocery stores, a bakery and a toy store.
  • As the southern end of the ensemble, a petrol station with two petrol pumps and a residential and commercial building for the petrol station attendant (Prenzlauer Chaussee 163) was built. This facility was used well into the 1960s. When the operator finally gave up on Minol , a Deutsche Post branch took up residence in the tank attendant's house .
  • The lake is accessed west of the Chaussee via a sloping promenade, from which parking facilities for the visitors' vehicles were created. The central area was decorated with flower beds.
  • The beach café was a special attraction. It had a bar south of the entrance area , the dance floor of which featured a glass mosaic. It was lit from below while the bar was open. In the 1970s, the operator at the time, the HO , expanded the café into a dining restaurant and now called it a beach restaurant. It has a larger terrace facing the lake.
  • The entire lido - measuring 200 meters long and an average of 30 meters wide - was an important part of the station complex with lido area described here. As usual at the time of construction, small changing rooms were created along the surrounding wall. A meadow and sandy beach invited and invites visitors to the outdoor pool for intensive use. Finally, a boat rental completed the outdoor area. With a diving tower, non-swimmer and swimmer area, the facility offered visitors to Wandlitz a variety of options.

Changes between 1990 and 2009

Wandlitzsee cultural station
  • After the station building was extensively renovated in 1997/98, it no longer served its original purpose. In coordination with the management of Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn-AG (NEB) as the owner, it became a cultural station , in whose former station hall exhibitions or events were held.
The former service rooms on the upper floor were used by the municipal administration (library and building department). The station restaurant was leased and a Greek restaurant moved in. Another innkeeper temporarily ran the southeastern premises. During this time, the Wandlitzsee stop could only be reached via a side entry or exit.
  • Since the beginning of the 21st century there are two small restaurants, a shoe shop, a real estate and betting office in the northern low-rise building. A bakery / pastry shop has been preserved in the southern low-rise building; In the rear area, a modern low-rise building for the Edeka grocery chain was added around 1992 .
  • After the fall of the Wall, the tank attendant's house was not empty for long, the bookseller Brigitte Oertel had rented it and offered stationery, books and magazines as well as school accessories here until around 2016.
The entrance for the cars can still be seen, but the weather protection roof had to be removed because it was dilapidated. In 2017 the little house was empty.
  • In 1998, the local government redesigned the green space between the car park and the beach restaurant. The Berlin artist Michael Klein designed a fountain based on the legend “How the vendace got into the lake” using a bronze basin, a fisherman and the text of the legend on a bronze plate on the floor in front of the complex. The fountain was officially called the Fischerbrunnen and was erected in front of the beach restaurant in 2000.

  • After the fall of the Wall, an Italian restaurateur was found to manage the beach restaurant . After it had been listed as a historical monument, he had to downsize the building and have the front facing the street rebuilt based on old models.
  • The outdoor pool is still there - now with a modern diving platform and water slide, and the boat rental, expanded to include treadmills and kayaks. The owner and operator is the municipality of Wandlitz, which pays the lake owner (privatized since 2003) an annual rent.

Usages from 2010

Around 2008, the municipality and NEB decided to completely rebuild the station wing, for which 350,000 euros were invested. Since October 10, 2009, the station hall, which has been reopened to the public, has been offering tickets for sale , a fashion café , a flower shop and other small commercial units.

In January 2010 the tourist information moved from the foyer of the town hall to the station building. The restaurant with Greek cuisine had to close around 2013 because the NEB set up a bike rental shop here.
