Michael Klein (* 1943 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) is a German sculptor . His sculptures are in numerous public places in Berlin and in the state of Brandenburg.

Life

After attending school, Michael Klein completed an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor from 1959 to 1962. This was followed by studying sculpture at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art . His teachers included Heinrich Drake and Ludwig Engelhardt . After dropping out of his studies in 1965/1966, he became a restorer in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin , but continued his studies from 1967. After successfully completing his diploma, Michael Klein went into business for himself with a studio and in 1977 also took on tasks as a freelance assistant in the field of sculpture at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art (until 1982). After the fall of the Berlin Wall , he moved to Neuenhagen near Berlin and set up a new studio there.

Michael Klein was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR from 1971 to 1989 , and since 1990 he has been a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists Berlin.

Artistic creation

Exhibitions

Between 1972 and 2006 Michael Klein took part in many exhibitions and also held his own factory exhibitions. A concrete example of participation in an exhibition is given here:

  • In 2006 Michael Klein exhibited a large number of his creations under the title Sculptures in Stucco and Bronze as part of the retrospective of the artist Erich Sauer from Frankenthal . He thus participated in the 5th Strausberg Sculpture Summer Academy.

Klein also went on study trips to Italy, Greece, Poland, France, Israel and the Ukraine.

Michael Klein mainly works his representations in bronze , some also in stucco or in other stones such as granite . Material combinations are often used. The bronze casts are made in the Wilfried Hann art foundry , among others .

  • 1980/82: debutante. For Friedrich-Wilhelm-August Froebel
A 150 cm high bronze female figure stands on a granite base. On the floor in front of the corners of the pedestal are the play elements favored by Froebel, cube, cylinder and sphere.

Location on Claire-Waldoff-Straße, first Friedrichstraße 129, Berlin-Mitte
  • 1994: Huguenot medal; Relief of the above pelican sculpture embossed on metal, with the inscription "Huguenot Quarter Berlin Friedrichstrasse 129".
(Explanation: Under the symbol of the pelican, who nourishes his young with his own heart and soul in times of greatest need, they cared for their sick, old and orphans.)
  • 1994: Cain and Abel, bronze, total height: 450 cm.

  • 1996: Bettina and Achim von Arnim, bronze monument.

  • 1998: Bettina's bench, a trickle fountain made of bronze,
also Arnimplatz; a simple bench without a back, on the seat of which there is a cushion with an open book and a pair of gloves; a rough branch is in front of it on the ground; everything is mounted on an artificial stone base .

On Anton-Saefkow-Platz in front of the library
  • 2012, June 9th (planned): Hans Fallada, bronze
Location: in the town hall extension of Neuenhagen / Wegendorf (Theatron). A seated Fallada is placed on a bronze bench. In 2007, the city administration asked artists to come up with ideas that “should make art in Neuenhagen more tangible”. Michael Klein, who runs his studio in Neuenhagen, contributed to the design for Hans Fallada and was commissioned for the memorial. The mayor praised: "... [it is] a work of art in public space that simultaneously brings history to life."
