biography
Engelhardt grew up in Saalfeld in a commercial family. In 1942 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. Towards the end of the Second World War , he was eventually taken prisoner by the Americans as a lieutenant . Engelhardt was then sent to a Russian internment camp in the Caucasus through a prisoner exchange. After his release in 1948, he returned to Saalfeld and did an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker. As a result of political developments, Engelhardt no longer joined any party. After completing his training, Engelhardt studied at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art from 1951 to 1956 and was then a master student of Heinrich Drake until 1958 . From 1969 he was a member of the Academy of Arts in East Berlin , from 1974 to 1978 as secretary of the visual arts section. Since the mid-1960s he lived and worked primarily in Gummlin on Usedom , where the figure group Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels was created.
