After renovation in 1985

The Pride of Al Salam 95 was a RoRo passenger ferry. She sank on October 17, 2005 after a collision off Tawfiq , killing several people.

history

The ship was built in 1972 as the Free Enterprise VI by ICH Holland at the Gusto shipyard in Schiedam . She was the third in a series of five sister ships of the European Ferries Group, named Free Enterprise IV to Free Enterprise VIII . The Free Enterprise VI was initially operated as part of the Townsend Thoresen service between the canal ports of Dover , Calais , Zeebrugge and Boulogne .

In 1985, the Bremerhaven Schichau shipyard provided the Free Enterprise VI with an additional cargo deck. Two years later, the shipping company P&O European Ferries took over the European Ferries Group and named the ship Pride of Sandwich in 1988 . The ship remained on the Dover-Zeebrugge service until 1992, after which it was used as the Pride of Ailsa on the Cairnryan-Larne route until 1996 .

In 1996 the Egyptian shipping company El Salam Shipping & Trading Company in Suez acquired the ship and from then on operated it under the Panamanian flag as the Pride of Al Salam 95 pilgrim ferry between Suez and Jeddah .

Collision and sinking

On October 16, 2005, the Pride of Al Salam 95 departed from Jeddah with 1,466 passengers on board. Around 7.30 p.m. on October 17, near Port Tawfiq, a collision occurred between the pilgrim ship waiting for permission to enter Suez and the bulk carrier Pearl Of Jebel Ali leaving the Suez Canal . The bulk carrier hit the ferry at the level of the engine room and tore a hole about five meters long. Both ships remained hooked after the collision, so that it was possible for the passengers and the crew of the ferry to climb aboard the Pearl Of Jebel Ali . After the evacuation of the badly hit ferry and a reverse maneuver by the Pearl Of Jebel Ali , the two ships separated, whereupon the passenger ferry sank within a few minutes. According to various publications, between two and eleven people died in the accident and another 45 to 98 people were injured. There were no fatalities or injuries on the Pearl Of Jebel Ali , and the ship suffered only minor damage.

Although the Pride of Al Salam 95 sank in the southern entrance of the Suez Canal area with its boat traffic, her wreck is no obstacle to shipping and is only appropriate buoys marked.
