The Ängelsberg – Kärrgruvan railway is a single-track railway in the historic Swedish province of Västmanland in today's Västmanland County . It leads from Ängelsberg via Norberg to Kärrgruvan and was built and operated by Norbergs järnvägsaktiebolag .
The route is known as Norbergs järnväg (NJ) or Norbergsbanan in Sweden .
history
Norbergs järnvägsaktiebolag
The concession for the railway line was first awarded to Norbergs järnvägsaktiebolag on December 21, 1850 . The concession described a narrow-gauge railway for Norbergs Gruvbolag with a gauge of 891 mm. Fredrik Sundler was commissioned to build the railway.
The preliminary start of operations took place on December 1, 1853 on the section between Kärrguvan and Trättsbo. The traffic during the construction phase was carried out with the first locomotive built in Sweden , the Förstlingen from Munktells Mekaniska Verkstad in Eskilstuna .
Norbergs Nya Järnvägsaktiebolag
After a bankruptcy related to the incorrectly constructed track construction, a new company, Norbergs Nya Järnvägsaktiebolag, was founded. This took over the concession on June 19, 1855 with the unusual gauge of 1188 mm, which corresponded to four svenska fot ( German Swedish feet ).
The Kärrgruvan – Trättsbo section was re-gauged and the entire route to Ängelsberg was opened for public transport on June 27, 1856.
Standard gauge
On January 1, 1876, rail operations were stopped to convert the line to standard gauge with 1435 mm. A large part of the route between Engelsbergs bruk and Kärrgruvan was laid on a new, modified subgrade. The reopening takes place on August 30, 1876. In connection with the widening of the track, the Stockholm – Västerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar (SWB) built a connection to Ängelsberg. Before that, the ore was brought from the Norbergsfaltet to Ängelsberg over the lake Åmänningen and further with Pramen over the Strömsholm Canal to Mälaren .
The management of the line was taken over from 1876 on from Stockholm-Västerås-Bergslagens Järnvägar (SWB). The Krylbo – Mjölby railway line built by the Swedish state was connected to Snyten station in 1900.
Sale to SWB
In 1922, SWB took over Norbergs Nya Järnvägsaktiebolag . This ended the history of Norbergs Nya Järnvägsaktiebolag as an independent public limited company.
nationalization
SWB, in turn, was taken over by the state as part of the general nationalization of the railways in 1944. It remained a state company with the same name for another year and was integrated into Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in 1945 .
Cessation of operations
Passenger traffic on the route ended on November 1, 1962. Liquid iron was still transported from 1974 to 1981 between Spännarhyttan and Surahammars bruk.
Freight traffic between Snyten and Kärrgruvan was stopped on April 1, 1990, as the mine and the associated iron industry were shut down.
Operation today
The Snyten – Ängelsberg section is used by Trafikverket for rerouting traffic between Godsstråket genom Bergslagen and Bergslagspendeln (a rail link between Ludvika and Kolbäck via Smedjebacken and Fagersta ) in the event of traffic disruptions or line works. The section from Snyten to Kärrgruvan has not been closed.
After a long period of inactivity on the line, Engelsbergs Norberg Järnvägshistoriska förening (ENJ) began to travel the Ängelsberg – Kärrgruvan route in summer with museum rail buses in August 2003 .
Trafikverket is looking for a new owner. Länsstyrelsen i Västmanlands län appealed against the decision to suspend maintenance work in 2013 .
