The Číčenice – Týn nad Vltavou railway is a railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated as a state-guaranteed local railway Wodňan – Moldauthein . It runs in southern Bohemia from Číčenice to Týn nad Vltavou ( Moldautein ).

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The concession " to build and operate a standard-gauge local train from Wodňan to Moldauthein " was awarded to Mr. Karl Nikolan, businessman and member of the district committee in Moldauthein, Adalbert Kniha, councilor and member of the district council in Moldauthein and Karl Malek, prince archbishop of Moldauthine on November 23, 1895. Part of the concession was the obligation to start construction of the line immediately and to complete it within two years. The Austrian state guaranteed an annual net income of four percent annually up to a maximum of 28,000  florins . The duration of the concession was set at 90 years. On July 17, 1897, the statutory completion date of the line was changed to December 31, 1898 in a statement by the Ministry of Railways .

The share capital of the local railway Wodňan – Moldauthein , founded in 1898, amounted to a total of 600,000 crowns in 1,500 ordinary shares of 400 crowns each. The seat of the company was in Vienna.

The line was opened on October 23, 1898. The operation was carried out by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) on behalf of the owners.

In 1912 the timetable of the local railway indicated three mixed pairs of 2nd and 3rd class trains. They needed a little over an hour for the 22-kilometer route.

After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in October 1918, management was transferred to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). With the nationalization of the local railway company from January 1, 1925, the infrastructure also belonged to the ČSD network.

With the use of modern motor trains , travel times were significantly shortened in the early 1930s. The winter timetable of 1937/38 listed five pairs of 3rd class passenger trains, all of which ran as motorized trains. The journey time was 36–43 minutes. Another passenger train in the direction of Číčenice – Týn nad Vltavou only ran during the fair in Týn nad Vltavou.

During the Second World War , the route lay entirely in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . The operators were now the Protectorate Railways Bohemia and Moravia (ČMD-BMB). On May 9, 1945, the entire line came back to the ČSD.

In connection with the construction of the Temelín nuclear power plant , the line between Číčenice and Temelín was expanded at the end of the 1980s for route class D4 (axle load 22.5 t, meter load 8 t). The connecting line of the power plant begins directly at Temelín station.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

In the 2012 timetable, the route was served by passenger trains every day at approximately two-hour intervals. An additional train ran to and from Temelín on weekdays. On December 14, 2013 the scheduled passenger traffic was discontinued.

With financial support from the neighboring communities of Temelín and Týn nad Vltavou, the route is to be used again with two scheduled pairs of passenger trains on Saturdays from March 26 to August 31, 2019. The operator of the trains is the railway company KPT Rail of the Klub přátel Transverzálky (Club of Transversal Railway Friends ).

Route description

The line branches off the main line České Budějovice – Plzeň at the Číčenice station in a southerly direction and then heads east via Temelín to Týn nad Vltavou on the Vltava River. Temelín station is the starting point of the two-kilometer tow to the Temelín nuclear power plant with its own works station in Křtěnov.
