The Angren – Pop railway is a 123.1 km long, electrically operated railway line operated by the Uzbek Railway , which connects the Fergana Valley with the rest of Uzbekistan . The central structure of the route is the 19.2 km long Kamchiq tunnel under the pass of the same name . It was officially opened on June 22, 2016.

history

After Uzbekistan gained independence in 1991, the Ferghana Valley could only be reached from the other regions on a mountain road over the 2,267 m high Kamchiq Pass or via Tajik territory. It was therefore decided to build the Angren – Pop railway line in order to create a direct winter-safe connection. The new route avoids transit through Tajikistan, which saves Uzbekistan around 25 million US dollars in transit fees annually.

The construction of the route cost 1.63 billion US dollars . The Uzbek government financed most of the construction work with 1.44 billion, the China Exim Bank contributed 350 million and financed the Kamchiq tunnel. The World Bank granted a US $ 195 million loan with a term of 25 years to finance the overhead contact line and signaling systems, power supply and technical support during the construction phase.

The opening took place on June 22nd, 2016 in the presence of Islom Karimov , President of Uzbekistan, and Xi Jinping , Chinese President . The opening train ran from Angren to Pop and consisted of a Chinese-built electric locomotive with four passenger coaches. The celebration was broadcast from the tunnel portal of the Kamchiq tunnel to the invited guests gathered in the Uzexpocentre via a video link .

Route description

The route leads from Angren along the eastern side of the valley of the river of the same name . She travels around the coal - opencast mine Angren on the south side, the valley crosses below the dam of Angren Dam and about 25 km follows the river to the north portal of the Kamchiq tunnel. The tunnel will take about 16 minutes. The south portal lies in a side valley of the Ferghana valley. The route passes the settlements of Oltinkon and Chodak before reaching the main valley after about 30 kilometers from the tunnel portal. Here it turns to the east and reaches the existing route Qo'qon - Namangan at Pop .

In addition to the summit tunnel, the route has bridges with a total length of more than two kilometers.
