The 23.3 km long route was single-track. The trains could cross in the Schlitz and Oberwegfurth stations. The route follows the river of the same name as far as Schlitz, and from Schlitz then in large parts the river Fulda . At the end of the route, there was a possibility to change trains to the Vogelsbergbahn and the Gründchenbahn .

The route was opened in two parts. The Bad Salzschlirf – Schlitz section on October 1, 1898, the Schlitz – Niederjossa section on November 10, 1914.

Passenger traffic ceased on May 31, 1964. The line was closed in three parts: the Oberwegfurth – Niederjossa section on January 15, 1973, Schlitz – Oberwegfurth on February 1, 1974 and the Bad Salzschlirf – Schlitz section on September 23, 1989.

On the section from Bad Salzschlirf to Schlitz, the Hessen Railway Cycle Route now runs, while the Fulda Cycle Route runs on the section from Hutzdorf to Niederjossa .
