Almost Heroes (Alternative title: Almost Heroes - Two idiot conquer America , Original title: Almost Heroes ) is an American adventure - comedy by Christopher Guest in the year 1998 .

action

The Lewis and Clark expedition to the Pacific started at the beginning of the 19th century . Leslie Edwards prepares an alternative expedition. He hires the adventurer Bartholomew Hunt and the language expert Guy Fontenot. Hunt was a scout for the army; he insulted an officer and was sentenced to death. Edwards obtained a pardon from the US President for him , but instructed the driver of his car to drive to the place of execution without undue rush. Hunt is saved at the last minute.

The expedition participants reach a settlement of the Indians from the tribe of the Iowas . Edwards and Fontenot greet an Indian they believe to be a chief and are slapped by him. They consider it a local custom until the real chief comes and tells them that the man is “crazy”.

Fontenot bites off the ear of one of the expedition members who is looking at his wife Shaquinna. The expedition arrives at a settlement where the Spaniards led by Hidalgo appear. Hidalgo wants Fontenot to join him so that “everything that belongs to him” - including Shaquinna - also belongs to Hidalgo. Hunt get drunk the Spaniards and Fontenot; the rest of the expedition escapes.

Shaquinna speaks to Edward in private one evening and kisses him, but he insults her as a "wild Indian". A little later the expedition reaches the Rocky Mountains , where Edwards becomes seriously ill. Shaquinna says she can make a medicine for which she needs an eagle's egg. Hunt acquires the egg after fighting an eagle, but he eats it. The second egg that is worried - again after a fight - is eaten. Hunt brings the third egg to Shaquinna, who breaks it and says all she needs is the shell.

The expedition members reach the Pacific. The narrator's voice says that the act remained unknown.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that days after seeing the film he was still puzzling about what Christopher Guest - whose sense of humor he usually respects - might find funny about the concept or the execution. The script was "unsuccessful" and the film had very few laughs. Matthew Perry is miscast, Chris Farley is playing his "usual" routine, but does not seem to be "with the heart". The supporting actors would only leave a “fleeting” impression.

“Bitten ears, a bagpiper who only knows one melody and a French translator who doesn't speak any language: this is the level at which the gags take place. Chris Farley gave his last performance in the underground joke. He died of a drug overdose in 1997. Conclusion: It never gets stupid or stupid. "

“A rough comedy, the last role of actor Chris Farley, whose gags only want to ignite occasionally and which spreads more hysteria than humor. Only costumes and camera work generate some interest, but that's not enough to keep the audience interested. "
