The Düsseldorf-Unterrath – Düsseldorf Airport Terminal railway line is a branch line from the Düsseldorf-Unterrath railway station on the Cologne – Duisburg railway line to the Düsseldorf Airport Terminal railway station in the north of the North Rhine-Westphalian capital of Düsseldorf .
The railway line is classified as a main line, has two tracks throughout and is electrified with overhead lines . It is also connected from the north from the Düsseldorf-Unterrath Karthäuser Weg junction via a single-track and also electrified line.
history
On October 27, 1975, in preparation for the expansion of the Cologne – Duisburg railway line for S-Bahn traffic, a new line was opened from the Düsseldorf-Derendorf Dp junction to the Düsseldorf airport terminal for passenger traffic. For this purpose, existing sidings were expanded into a double-track line, electrified and extended to under the reception building of Terminal C.
At that time, it was still at the same level as the tracks on route 2670 north of Düsseldorf-Unterrath station, which had been used mainly for freight traffic until the end of the 1980s; a level access to Unterrath station was only built at the end of the 1980s . On May 27, 1990, the northern access route was put into operation, so that the terminal station could also be reached from the Ruhr area directly from the Kalkum station, which was closed at the same time.
After the fire disaster in 1996 and the subsequent brief closure of the terminal building, a temporary platform was built halfway. This stop at Dusseldorf Airport Departure E was located near Terminal E, which was only set up as a makeshift and only for departure, and was therefore only used for disembarking and remained in operation until the airport long-distance train station opened on May 26, 2000.
Todays situation
The platform of the provisional stopping point can still be seen well even in aerial photographs; it is crossed today (without stopping) by the automatic elevated train called the Skytrain . An alternate junction and the connection route to the north are still operational today, but are no longer used.
With the opening of the long-distance train station on the main line from Düsseldorf to Duisburg , the stopping point and connecting route became superfluous, and turning in the underground terminus was simply too time-consuming with through trains such as the former S 21 line, which ran parallel to the S 1 line.
Due to problems with the installation and removal of the Skytrain , a bus shuttle was set up initially, since 1 July 2002, the driverless elevated train connects the remote station via two intermediate holding P4 car park and Terminal A / B with the current terminus Terminal C .
