The Haaren – Aachen-Rothe Erde railway branches off in Haaren (a district of Aachen since 1972 ) southeast of the Aachen North – Jülich railway line and leads in a large arc to the Aachen-Rothe Erde station . The railway line , opened in 1875, was used almost exclusively for freight traffic until 1983; The only exception was short-term passenger traffic in 1876. Since 1983, traffic has been handled by train control ; since 2007, it has only been a legal siding at Aachen-Rothe Erde station.

Infrastructure

The Aachen industrial railway was at the station Aachen-Rothe Erde not have its own railway station, but hair a little was Güterbahnhof built and the railway terminus Aachen North exist next to a small reception building for the passenger traffic by Jülich a freight handling and loading ramps , several loading tracks and sidings .

history

On December 31, 1875, the Aachen industrial railway began operating the connection from the newly created Gleisdreieck in Haaren north of Aachen to Rothe Erde . Thus, together with the Aachen Nord – Jülich and Stolberg – Kohlscheid railway lines, a link was created between the coal mines of the Wurmrevier and industry in the north of Aachen with the Rothe Erde ironworks. For the purpose of a continuous connection to the route towards Mariadorf and Hoengen , the small track triangle was built in the area of the Clarasiedlung on Prager Ring west of Haaren. It was dismantled in the 1980s except for the connection from Aachen Nord train station to Haaren.

In the course of the nationalization of all railway lines, the line was under the Prussian State Railways from May 1, 1887 .

After the cessation of freight traffic between Aachen Nord station and Würselen on the route to Jülich, feeder traffic ceased in the early 1980s. On December 31, 1983, this section of the route was officially closed. The remaining section of the Jülich line from Aachen North to the Gleisdreieck in Haaren remained in place to operate the sidings over the connecting line from the Rothe Erde station. In November 2007, the Haaren – Aachen-Rothe Erde line, together with the remaining part of the Aachen North – Jülich line, was converted into a siding at the Aachen-Rothe Erde station, thereby losing its status as a railway line.

Today the Haaren – Aachen-Rothe Erde connection is used to transfer vehicles from the Talbot wagon factory . Due to the lack of overhead lines, electric vehicles have to be pulled by a diesel locomotive.
