The Orlamünde – Oppurg (also: Orlabahn ) line is a branch line in Thuringia . It branches off from the Saalbahn in Orlamünde and leads in the Orla valley to Pößneck . Until 1946 there was a continuation to Oppurg on the Leipzig – Probstzella railway line .

history

The 11.7 km long line, which branches off the Saalbahn in Orlamünde and is only operated to the lower Pößneck station today, was inaugurated on October 1, 1889 up to this station.

The second section was the 3.2 kilometer connection from Pößneck und Bf to Oppurg, which was opened in 1892 and closed again in 1946. That section of the route was dismantled after the war as a reparation payment for the Soviet Union .

Several bridges were required to build the line. The most striking structure is the 84-meter-long Saale bridge between Orlamünde and Freienorla, and the small river Orla, which gives it its name, was crossed several times. In the urban area of ​​Pößneck, the road Pößneck – Neustadt (Orla) was bridged on the Oppurger route branch.

In 1979, Pößneck lower station with an EZMG signal box received modern security technology with light signals, which were in operation until 2002.

The remaining stretch of road today was completely renovated in 1999/2000 so that it could be reopened for the State Garden Show in Pößneck in 2000. All stops received paved standard platforms, and all level crossings that were still guarded were converted to train-operated operation. All switches and side tracks have been removed, so that the entire route is now actually a station track from Orlamünde . Train crossings are no longer possible, so there is always only one train on the route. In the years following the renovation, the hourly cycle was introduced; since the timetable change in 2001, trains to Jena Saalbahnhof have been tied through.

Vehicles and operation

From the end of the steam locomotive era until the end of the GDR, class 110 diesel locomotives , mostly with two or three- axle Reko cars or later four-axle Reko cars, ran on the typical branch line , as well as the 106 series .

After the fall of the Wall in the GDR , the class 119 diesel locomotives, which had become vacant due to the decline in traffic in higher-quality services, were used with quite new DR compartment cars or older DB cars .

In freight traffic, wood was most recently mainly transported from the extensive forests along the route, coal for heating purposes to Pößneck and until around 1991 passenger trains with goods transport were still running, some of which even shunted with passengers on board at Langenorla-West station. This resulted in travel times of up to 36 minutes in 1991 (for comparison: 17 minutes in 2016). Numerous photos from the period after 2000 show that, in addition to class 628 railcars, there were also class 642 railcars . "Regioshuttle" railcars have been in use since 2012 .

Operating companies

Initially, the line belonged to the private Saalbahn until it was taken over by the Prussian State Railways in 1895 . Since the establishment of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1920, the line was operated by this state railway until it became part of the Deutsche Bahn AG in 1994 .

After the transport services were awarded in the competition procedure, the regional rail transport has been carried out by the Erfurt Railway since 2012 .

Museum / historical

  • The Orla Railway Museum was located in the reception building of the Langenorla Ost / Kleindembach station until 2018.
  • The former service building of the Freienorla stop is a listed building.
  • On the bridge over Neustädter Straße in Pößneck there was the word Wähl Thälmann until it was torn down , which has survived and was cultivated in the GDR.
